Grafton House is almost surrounded by the Grafton Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary.
This is a non-commercial organisation, run by a family trust, which helps to promote and protect the indigenous flora and fauna of the island of Tobago.
The Trust was founded by Eleanor Alefounder (the then owner and present owners' aunt) in 1963 following the devastation of
Hurricane Flora.
This rather unexpected event (Tobago is south of the Caribbean Hurricane Belt) damaged crops
and vegetation on the Island and deprived many of Tobago's birds a supply of food. Eleanor began to feed the starving birds and from this has grown the Trust.
Although primarily set up as a haven for the island's magnificent bird
population, over time the sanctuary has become an important local habitat for much more wildlife as it has retained a wide variety of native plant species
and has ensured a 200 acre site is kept free from property development.
